Baeksajang port in Taean, Chungcheongnam-do, where Daeha (Jumbo Shrimp) festival is held

Daeha (Jumbo Shrimp) festival is held in every October in Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. As far as I know, Daeha festival is held in only three places in Korea; Daeha festival in Namdang port, Hongseong, Daeha and gizzard shad festival in Muchang port and Daeha festival in Anmyeondo island. The festival is going to be held from 9, October to 1, November in Baeksajang port, for about a month. Daeha is mostly captured in Anmyeondo island, Taean. So if you want to have it a lot, visit there. It just takes about one hour from metropolitan area. I had two meals with seafood and Daeha. As I chewed Daeha, it became more sweet. I will show you two places at other times. Now, I will introduce you Baeksajang port.

“Blue crab bridge” is famous in Baeksajang port. Its official name is “Footbridge with Daeha and blue crab”. It connects Baeksajang port here and Deureuniang port on the opposite side. It looks like as if a blue crab opened its front legs. Many people take a picture in sunset.

I visited here in the late September, before Daeha festival is held, but it was so crowded. People seemed to visit here to eat Daeha and blue crab in season.

Mudskipper is also delicious in fall. This small fish, which is called “kosiraegi” in Busan dialect, is one of the most delicious fishes in fall along with a gizzard shad. Many people fish in the low seashore.

Father fishes, and his child waits him sitting on the seashore. :-)

As I saw his basket, there was only one mudskipper. Haha. I asked him why he just captured one fish. He said he just came right before. I remember that I captured a lot of mudskippers in Busan a long time ago. I don't know how are these days.

I went to a market to buy Daeha. The price has been raised because Daeha is rarely captured these days.

The price is different every day. Natural Daeha costs 20,000 won~30,000 won for one kilogram(30~40), and farming Daeha costs 15,000 won~25,000 won. One kilogram of Daeha is quite a lot. So if you don't have many family members, you'd better buy only 500 grams. Or, eat with a gizzard shad and other seafood. Since it is greasy, you would be fed up with it.

Wow! Blue crab is also fresh. Steamed crab melts away in the mouth. Blue crab costs 10,000 won for one kilogram.

As the Korean proverb says, a daughter-in-law who ran away from home would come back because a gizzard shad is so delicious in fall. Two or three family members would fill themselves with 500g Daeha and some gizzard shads. Grilled gizzard is so delicious!

Fish markets around Baeksajang port are not huge, but cheaper than other markets. The price of Daeha has been more risen because of decrease of catch. It costed 15,000 won for one kilogram last year.

The most famous street foods here are deep-fried shrimp, deep-fried jumbo shrimps and deep-fried blue crab. You should try them. Well, let's see~

Wow! They are well-done. I can hardly pass them. :-)

Deep-fried blue crab is so inviting. Since it is in season, it would have much flesh in it.

I planned to eat Daeha in lunch and dinner time, so I bought some deep-fried shrimps. Freshdeep-fried shrimps melt in my mouth. It is awesome. It costs 500 won per unit.

I bought a cup of conch to eat while walking on the street. I don't remember exactly, but it might cost 1,000 won.

If you stay pension, you'd better to buy some seafood, and cook them inside. It would be wonderful. The price is put per one kilogram, but you'd better to buy various kinds of seafood as they are sold per grams. Or, you can pay 20,000 won and get various kinds of seafood.

Dried fishes are also very cheap. People in metropolitan area do not eat dried fishes often, but those who live in fishing village eat them a lot. So they can keep them for a long time. Dried fishes are chewy and delicious when you boil or grill them.

This is sold off. Huge magnuspinnatuses only cost 10,000 won per one box. In fact, regardless of habit or fun, it is cheaper than purchasing fish bait for 10,000 won. :-)

Even though the store is small, it has almost all kinds of seafood. I bought small anchoby and twenty squids to make side dishes.

There are many cafes made of buses or trucks in Taean these days. There are several cafes in Baeksajang port and Kkotji beach. It seems natural whether it is hot or cold. I want to have a cup of coffee here, but I should be hurry to eat lunch. :-)

If you want to eat fresh Daeha and blue crab, you should visit Daeha festival in Baeksajang port, Anmyeondo island. There are a lot of cheap seafood and restaurants, so you can enjoy your vacation. It is easily accessible by Seohaean expressway from metropolitan area.
